Jueteng investigation (2005)
Summary:
Despite the government's repeated denials, three witnesses surfaced to detail the continued operation of jueteng in Bicol - including the list of officials who receive "shares" of proceeds from the jueteng operations, among them members of the First Family. Lacson provided security for the three in time for their testimonies before a Senate hearing on the subject.
Effect:
The testimonies of the witnesses helped shatter the government's repeated claims that jueteng is "dead". While some of the witnesses later refused to testify - but did not recant their testimonies - it also showed the extent of the pressure faced by witnesses and "whistleblowers" in corruption-related cases, especially those involving personalities close to Malacañang.
